Asphalt Wars 7-28-2012 - Records in the Making?

This Saturday is the 28th day of July, which means Asphalt Wars will be traveling back to Thompson Raceway Park! Given the performances at Pittsburgh last weekend (July 21st), and at Thompson last month, this weekend's event has all the makings to be another record setting race for TRP.

The man who has won every event completed in 2012, Mike DiDomenico.

Alright, first topic. From what I have heard, it sounds like we may have a record car count in both classes! We may also see a few faces we haven't seen yet this season! I do believe we will also see some new rides? Ohio native, Jared Yuhasz who formerly drove a blown altered, is now behind the wheel of a Dragster! They tested this past weekend, and they have what seems to be a promising combination.

The man who has won Outlaw Dragster at every Asphalt Wars this season, is Mike DiDomenico. With Mike's recent success, he has drawn a target on his back! Everyone in the Outlaw Dragster pits are out to get Mike, and stop him from sweeping the series in 2012. There are multiple drivers capable of winning these events, the cards just haven't seemed to fall their way yet!

Last month at Thompson, and last weekend at Pittsburgh, former ADRL Pro Extreme Champ. Jason Hamstra has been out for blood. At both races, the DeMotte, Indiana native has broken the Elapsed Time Record. Paul Molnar, the former holder of both those records, says that he will in fact get them back. We talked to Paul after his record was broken by a mere .0008 of a second at TRP. When NW Photography's Kyle Rokosky asked Paul what he thought of Jason breaking the record, his answer was short and modest. "I think it's wonderful." said Molnar. "I love seeing these races grow, and seeing new competitors do well. All that record means is that we all need to step it up a notch!" With this said, and with the numbers presented at Thompson last month, I think we will in fact see our first all sub 4 second field in Outlaw Dragster.

We've covered the subject of record car counts, and a potential sub 4 second OD bump. Now how about the Outlaw Dragster Track record? Will Molnar or Hamstra break the current 3.7384 @ 195.03 record? Or will someone else step up to the plate? Kevin Hamstra told us his goal with this dragster is to go in the 3.6 second range. Will we see that this weekend with conditions looking to be around 80°? Come on out and find out with the rest of us!

Bruce Boland conquering the Outlaw Pro Mod track record last year at TRP. 3.98 on an early shut off pass.

Last August at Thompson Raceway Park, the 20th of August to be exact, Bruce Boland and his Screwcharged '41 Willys ventured to the United States from the great land of Canada. When Bruce showed up that weekend, he was one of many cars on a mission! The mission at the time was to be the first door slammer in the 3 second range at TRP. In the opening round of qualifying, the Canadian piloted his B&B Racing ride to the number 1 spot with a 3.98! While applauding his breath taking achievement, I realized that Bruce lifted early as he drifted out of the groove towards the center line! Since that pass last year, the closest anyone has gotten to that is a 4.02 if I remember correctly. After last season however, it was decided that Screw type superchargers wouldn't be permitted in Outlaw Pro Mod at Asphalt Wars events.

In the 2 events that have been contested at TRP this year, we haven't seen a lot of faces that we usually do in Outlaw Pro mod! With names like Andy Jensen, Bobby Martin, Ray Schuler, Carl Rossler, Pete Ignatovic, Chip Forman, Bill Lutz, and Dave Roemer lurking in the shadows, things could get interesting if and when we see them!

Last, but certainly not least, when will we see 200+ Miles Per Hour? Will it be a Door Slammer, a Dragster, or even an Altered? Without a doubt, we will see a great show! Hopefully the men and women behind these machines can make some of these unanswered questions happen!
